Attack on Titan synopsis

Attack on Titan brings giant homicidal killing machines to drive humanity to the brink of extinction and then feels begin.  Attack on Titan is the kind of anime that you show to your friend that just said “Anime?  Is that for kids and weirdos?” to shut them up.  From the very beginning, the show grabs your heart and just squeezes every ounce of compassion and feeling from you.

In the world of Attack on Titan humanity has been hunted and culled by Titans, 20 to 40-foot-tall giant naked soulless eating machines that will haunt your dreams.

Humanity builds walled cities to protect themselves and that has worked so far however one day a gigantic Titan taller than the wall comes and freaking kicks it down in the most brutal fashion possible.

As the city floods with Titans and the carnage begins tough life-or-death choices must be made. A mother chooses to have her son and adopted daughter saved while she is fed upon by the oncoming attack.

Folks that is literally all before the title card plays!

Like I said this series grabs hold and refuses to let you go. It has the same odd disconcerting feeling of Tokyo Ghoul which we reviewed as well

So what first hooked me to Attack on Titan?

No one is safe

I think that what most grabbed me during the first episode of this series was how they were willing to sacrifice characters.  The series spends a good amount of time enforcing the idea that no character is safe and that the normal rules of anime don’t really apply here.

Sure there are some of the common tropes such as the “female childhood friend” and “my dad is missing but the key to all of this” but what Game of Thrones did for TV I believe Attack on Titan has done for Anime.  It is a series that turns common rules on their heads and makes you go “This is so good!  Why isn’t every show like this!”

Attack on Titan has phenomenal animation

The second thing that got me was that it has some of the best pieces of animation in it that I have ever seen.  The action scenes are dynamic as the characters fly through the air.

It’s part action, part breakdance, part steampunk as the heroes fly through the buildings on gas-powered tithers.  I’ve got it, they're what you would get if you mixed Deadpool and Spiderman during their action scenes.

The music slaps so hard!

The 3rd one, if I'm being honest, is that freakin’ metal intro song!  I have found myself humming that while doing dishes trying to inject a little epicness into mundane tasks and I have to say it works brilliantly.  Honestly, try it next time you're doing something completely boring and tedious and it makes it at least 40% more epic.

So then why should we spend our time on Attack on Titan when there are so many other shows that pull for our attention?  Other than the great story the beautiful jaw-dropping animation makes you go “OH WOW!”  The answer?

Because it is amazing!  For many people Attack on Titan is their entry point for anime.  The show is on Toonami for crying out loud!  It is one of the most-watched animes on Netflix and continues to skyrocket in popularity.

Should you watch Attack on Titan?

If you haven’t already definitely give Attack on Titan a try.  It’s well worth the watch and with a second season due to drop in a little while here now is a great time to get caught up.  You can find Attack on Titan on most streaming services especially Netflix and Funimation Now.
