Lycoris Recoil takes the girls with guns genre and adds a bright and cheering exterior to the whole thing.
The girls with guns genre has been in recession in my opinion in recent years with prime examples of the genre such as Black Lagoon and Gunslinger Girl released nearly a decade ago. Lycoris Recoil is streaming on Crunchyroll.com at the time of this article being published.
Now is the perfect time to watch the first season of Lycoris Recoil as A-1 Studio has released a teaser trailer for season 2 recently. They have not released any details regarding the timeline however in the anime world the mere fact that it is being worked on is a stellar sign that we’ll get a season 2.
What is Lycoris Recoil about?
In a nutshell, Lycoris Recoil is about Takina Inoue and her relationship with Ace Chisato. Takina is part of an all-female government task force called "Lycoris", which eliminates criminals and terrorists in Tokyo. During an operation, she disobeys orders and is dismissed from the agency. She is then transferred to work with elite agent Chisato Nishikigi at a café called "LycoReco". Together, they manage the café while facing challenges from terrorists led by Majima.

Lycoris Recoil Action Figures and Clothes Shopping
The series has a lovely design and thanks to the anime Lycoris flower imagery has penetrated deep into the internet. I’m linking here to a collection of action figures and clothing on Amazon that I think is really cool.
Who are the Main Characters in Lycoris Recoil?
Chisato Nishikigi
Chisato is a skilled and upbeat agent working at LycoReco, a café that serves Western and Japanese sweets, which is a branch of DA. She is considered to be the agency's best agent ever, and her ability to dodge bullets at close range is regarded as "superhuman."
Chisato has a gun that was given to her by Yoshimatsu, a member of the Alan Institute when she was young, and she uses rubber bullets. The Institute also provided her with an artificial heart to prolong her life, but after it was sabotaged due to her refusal to use her powers to kill, her lifespan was reduced to about two months.
Chisato is voiced in Japanese by Chika Anzai, who has also lent her voice to anime like Boruto: Naruto Next Generation, High Rise Invasion, and The Promised Neverland. Director Shingo Adachi mentioned that he was very lucky to be able to get Chika Anzai as a talent for the Lycoris Recoil Project.
In English, she is dubbed by Lizzie Freeman, who has worked on shows like Rent-A-Girlfriend (seasons 1-3) and In/Spectre as the lead, as well as The Misfit of Demon Lord Academy.
Takina Inoue
Takina is a serious and confident Lycoris agent who possesses immense skills as a Lycoris agent. She is known for going out of her way to complete missions on her own, which has earned her a reputation as a skilled and independent agent.
However, her actions also have consequences, as she learned when she was dismissed from the agency after she indiscriminately fired at the enemies during an operation to intercept a firearms transaction in order to save a colleague.
Her actions compromised the lives of the other agents at the scene and ignored orders, leading to her dismissal. Despite her dismissal, Takina refused to give up her dream of being a Lycoris agent and was transferred to LycoReco.
She saw this as an opportunity to prove herself to the agency and to be reinstated as an agent. She began to cooperate with Chisato on managing the café, as well as on their missions, hoping to show the agency that she was still a valuable asset to the organization.
Shion Wakayama provides the Japanese voice for Takina, bringing the character to life with her captivating performance. Shion has been voice-acting since 2019 and has played several notable roles, including Shizuka Nanahoshi in Jobless Reincarnation Seasons 1 & 2 and Ohara in Pokemon.
For the English dub of the series, Takina will be voiced by Xanthe Huynh. Xanthe is a talented voice actress who has played many lead roles in anime, including Vampire in the Garden, Cayna in The Land of Leadale, and Taro in Heavenly Delusion. With her exceptional talent and dedication to her craft, Xanthe is sure to bring Takina to life in a way that truly captures the character's spirit and personality.
Overall, Takina is a complex and intriguing character who has a lot to offer the world of Lycoris. With her determination, skills, and willingness to work with others, she is sure to make a valuable contribution to the organization and to the series as a whole. Crunchyroll is currently streaming Lycoris Recoil.
Which Studio Produced Lycoris Recoil?
Lycoris Recoil is produced by A-1 Studios. This will be my first review of an A-1 series however their catalogue includes an extraordinary amount of animes that I have watched, enjoyed, and loved.
I will most certainly be talking about them in the future in on the site. A few examples of their past work include Darling in the Franxx, Gate, Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash, and Fairy Tail.
In addition, they are producing the highly anticipated anime adaptation of Solo Leveling. I can pretty much recommend everything in their catalog.
Who Directed Lycoris Recoil?
Lycoris Recoil is the first writing & directing credit for Shingo Adachi.
Shingo Adachi has spent the majority of his career as an animator and his best-known work is Sword Art Online. During the pitching and production phases for Lycoris Recoil Adachi was is credited for bringing a lighter tone to the anime. He introduced narrative devices that connected the anime to the darker themes that the author, Asaura, originally put forth.
Adachi is on record as saying that he “wanted to make the audience laugh every 5 minutes”. He definitely did that for me.
Girls with guns are fun however girls with robots that have guns are better.
So What Makes Lycoris Recoil Special?
Cute Yuri Relationship Between Main Characters
Lycoris Recoil is an action-packed adventure that will have you on the edge of your seat. The gun battles are meticulously crafted to be both fun and engaging while still feeling grounded in reality. While the intrigue in the show is good, it's not quite stellar.
However, what really seals the deal with Lycoris Recoil is the relationship between the two main characters, Chisato and Takina.
Chisato and Takina follow the Blue and Red Oni trope within anime. For those who may not be familiar with the trope, it's a fun topic and a narrative rabbit hole worth falling down into. Essentially, the trope is about two significant individuals who differ in their manner of acting, making them natural rivals.
One is typically more emotion/ feeling-driven, while the other is more calm and rational. Chisato and Takina even wear red and blue clothes, which gives further confirmation that the trope is in full effect. Regardless, the growing friendship between Chisato and Takina is what makes the show worth staying around for.
Chisato brings a vibrancy to Takina's world that it appears she has been missing. Takina eventually becomes more and more protective of Chisato as their bond grows stronger and stronger. While Chisato works every episode to win Takina over to her non-lethal ways of resolving conflict, it's clear that Takina is learning from Chisato as much as Chisato is learning from Takina.
The show gives off Vash the Stampede vibes, especially when Chisato talks about how everyone can be saved and that no one needs to die. All of this coming from the most deadly character in the show makes for a compelling narrative that will have you glued to your screen. So if you're looking for an action-packed adventure with heart, Lycoris Recoil is definitely worth a watch.
The Narrative Gets a Little Muddled
As I delved deeper into my research on Lycoris Recoil, I discovered that the anime's original story was much darker than what we see on screen. Though the producers ultimately decided to tone down the series, hints of its darker roots can still be felt in the plot's bones.
The concept of a clandestine organization training cold-blooded assassins seems more at home in a grittier genre, and yet Lycoris Recoil manages to blend cute humor and violent gun battles into a visually exciting and enjoyable experience. However, the anime's strength in balancing light and dark can also work against it. While Lycoris Recoil doesn't suffer from tonal whiplash, there's a constant undercurrent of darkness that permeates the show. Even during moments of levity, the viewer can't shake the feeling that something sinister is lurking just beneath the surface.
It's a testament to the show's storytelling that it can keep its audience on the edge of their seats, never quite knowing what to expect next. Overall, Lycoris Recoil is a fascinating study in how a show can evolve from its original concept while still retaining elements of its darker origins.
Lycoris Recoil Has Stellar Gun Scenes
Despite its occasional tonal shifts, the anime manages to keep its audience engaged and entertained, making it a must-watch for fans of action and adventure. One of the standout features of Lycoris Recoil is its gun scenes.
They are very well done, and it looks like the animators really spent time at gun ranges or at least watched a lot of footage to capture the realistic movements and effects. The attention to detail in these scenes is impressive, and they add a thrilling element to the action sequences.
But Lycoris Recoil is more than just a show about guns and action. The characters are well-written and multi-dimensional, and their interactions are often the highlight of the show. It's a testament to the show's storytelling that it can keep its audience on the edge of their seats, never quite knowing what to expect next.
Conclusion
Lycoris Recoild is an absolute must-watch anime that is streaming on Crunchyroll. The cuteness of Chisato and Takina along with the beautifully executed gun battles makes this series is a auto-watch in my opinion.
