Black Bullet-episode 5

Rentaro mets his next foe, professionalism gets tossed out the window, and political intrigue spikes in episode 5 of Black Bullet.

As Tokyo settles after the recent attacks by both the Gastoria caused in part by the terrorist Kagetane and kist daughter Rentaro focuses on finding a new school for Enju. While doing that he runs across a small girl being confronted by a bunch of rude looking guys who are giving her a rough time over her hitting them with her bike.

Rentaro rushes in, flashes a badge letting them know he means business, and the guys are on their way not wanting any piece of fighting Rentaro. The two share a moment and develop a quick back and forth rapport with one another. The girls name is Tina Sprout and what Rentaro doesn’t know is that she’s a cursed child here to kill the leader of the Tokyo area, Seitenshi.

Tina Sprouts arrive just happens to coincide with Seitenshi-sama meeting with the arrival of the leader of the Osaka area, Sogen Saitake.

Sogen meets with Seitenshi and lays out his tyrannical plan to turn Japan into a world superpower once the Gastoria are finally defeated.

His plan essentially boils down to follow or die and tells her in a very passionate and open manner that he will destroy any that dare oppose his plan.

Now Sogen seems to be a mix of eastern and western villain archetypes. He’s a megalomaniac, passionate, opportunistic, and he is dressed for the part. He’s character design screams classic vaudeville villain and while I don’t believe we’ve seen him twirl his mustache yet it would not suprise me in the least.

I mean come on the guy flaunts a monocle and with a mustache like that you know the guy will be hashing some serious shenanigans!

Seitenshi decides that Rentaro is the most capable person to protect her as they move forward with the talks. Which after watching him rip Kagetane apart the week before after he was nigh unstoppable to
anyone else makes sense however her bodyguards that are already in place have other thoughts on that subject.

They attempt to jump Rentaro when he gets lost in the governors building and muscle him into the bathroom where they give him a high school style warning albeit with guns pointed instead of whatever high schools would use when intimating someone...fists I guess?

Anyway the important bit is that they tell Rentaro to pass on the bodyguard job since they have it covered and they don’t need scum like him.

Yeah right. Rentaro disables them in 5 seconds flat and even manages to mess up the bodyguard captains face a little bit by grazing him with a bullet. Falling very short of the intended effect the scuffle convinces Rentaro to take the job.

Later that night Seitenshi is attacked via an extreme distance sniper battle.

Thanks to Enju warning him she had a “bad feeling about this” ala Star Wars Rentaro is on the look out, sees the muzzle flash and thanks to the distance has enough time to force Seitenshi to the floor of her car.

We see that it is Tina Sprout from earlier firing at Rentaro and the gang however owing to the distance of the shot Tina can’t make out Rentaros face so she doesn’t know it was him that foiled her attempt.

The episode ends with both Rentaro and Tina gazing in the direction of each other pondering other’s identity since neither one knows they were fighting one another. And so another story arc begins and we move one step closer to the inevitable climax of the series when Rentaro has to decide if he will put Enju down.

I mean don’t get me wrong it is going to hit me in all the feels but that is where this thing is heading.
