Hell's Paradise Synopsis

Powerful criminals are sent to an island to find a potion that will grant eternal life however the island is populated by powerful monsters and guardians in Hell’s Paradise.  Hell’s Paradise is the Hunger Games meets Samurai X set in ancient Japan and I am here for it ya’ll!

The action of Hell’s Paradise is fluid and sharp with wonderful kinetic power that is a welcome departure from my standard anime series that are out right now.

Hell’s Paradise is a refreshing departure in a season full of Isekai OP characters this series makes it very clear that no one is safe from the reach of death.  After doing some research I found out that the director of Hell’s Paradise did several episodes of Attack on Titan which I reviewed a while ago and Mappa the studio producing this series also produced Attack on Titan so it’s all coming together.

I’ll quickly go over the plot here for ya’ll.

The Plot of Hell's Paradise

Set in the Edo period of Japan, it follows the ninja Gabimaru and the executioner Yamada Asaemon Sagiri as they search for the elixir of immortality.

Captured during an assassination mission, Gabimaru the Hollow is sentenced to be executed, but nothing seems to kill him due to his superhuman body. Believing his love for his wife to be subconsciously keeping him alive, executioner Yamada Asaemon Sagiri offers him the chance to be pardoned of all crimes by the Shogunate if he finds the elixir of life on Shinsenkyo, a legendary realm recently discovered southwest of the Ryukyu Kingdom.

After losing five expedition teams sent to the island, this time the Shogunate sends a group of death row convicts. The convicts are each given a Yamada Asaemon executioner, who they must return with in order to obtain the pardon.

What is Hell's Paradise about?

Creepy settings on an island

Now that this is out of the way, the island that the series takes place on is creepy AF and I could never survive there.  Shinsenkyo is chock-full of disturbing creatures and monsters which vary from giant human-faced moths with stingers that inject poison into you that makes flowers burst out of your body and centipedes with human fingers for feelers to name just a few of the monstrous denizens of the island.

While I haven’t read the manga yet I’d recommend supporting the artist by buying their merch and it’s also really fun going straight to the source material as well.  You can purchase the manga HERE.

The atmosphere of Hell's Paradise reminds me of Terraformers, a survival horror action series that I reviewed years ago. The show introduces characters only to exterminate them shortly after, which keeps you on edge and unsure of what to expect. However, despite the characters being expendable, they are all well-designed and thought out.

This is a unique aspect as usually, disposable characters have minimal character design, but in Hell's Paradise, each character's trope or type is evident from the start.

Should you watch Hell's Paradise?

All and all I can’t recommend Hell’s Paradise as an entry-level anime for younger audiences however for more mature views it’s a great ride into the heart of darkness.
