Jujutsu Kaisen Season 1 Review

Jujutsu Kaisen is a thrilling anime series that follows a group of troubled teenagers who possess supernatural abilities. They use their powers to hunt down and eliminate gruesome curses that threaten their world.

The show is packed with intense action and suspenseful moments that will keep you on the edge of your seat. Overall, Jujutsu Kaisen is a must-watch for fans of the supernatural anime genre.

It’s also got everyone’s favorite bishōnen Satoru Gojo as well.

If you combined Bleach, Evangelion, and Hunter x Hunter together you would have something approaching Jujutsu Kaisen.

The show's structure has similarities to Bleach and Hunter x Hunter, with a touch of Evangelion's pessimism. This is because the manga's author, Gege Akutami, has acknowledged these properties as a significant influence on his style.

Where you absolutely feel the Evangelion influence is in the prequel to the series which was titled Tokyo Metropolitan Curse Technical School and was later released under the prequel format of Jujutsu Kaisen 0.

The lead in that is effectually a carbon copy of Shinji's character complete with aggravating negative self-talk dialogue and everything.

Studio and Director

Jujutsu Kaisen is a popular shonen anime that employs many familiar tropes such as elaborate monologues, characters battling their inner demons, and flashback scenes.

The studio behind the series, MAPPA, has an impressive portfolio that includes Kakegurui, Dorohedoro, Attack on Titan, and Chainsaw Man.

Despite the controversy surrounding Chainsaw Man's release, I personally enjoyed it, and MAPPA consistently produces quality work.

The director of Jujutsu Kaisen is Sunghoo Park who is known for this series as well as The God of High School which is on Crunchyroll.  He was also the key animator on a number of anime including Yuri on Ice.

If you’re a fan of Yuri please feel free to check out our review of Yuri is My Job as well as it helps us a lot.

Plot of Jujutsu Kaisen

The thrilling series revolves around a group of characters, including the highly athletic high school student Yuji Itadori, the Jujutsu Sorcerer Megumi Fushiguro, and the charming Sempai Satoru Gojo.

Yuji's grandfather left him with two important messages before passing away, and after accidentally inviting Curses to their school, Yuji ingests a decaying finger talisman to protect Megumi from a dangerous Curse named Ryomen Sukuna.

Despite Sukuna's malevolent nature, Yuji is able to maintain control over his body, catching the attention of Satoru Gojo, who proposes a plan to his superiors to delay Yuji's death sentence and have him train under Gojo until he eats all 20 of Sukuna's fingers, ultimately eliminating the Curse.

Meanwhile, a group of Cursed Spirits led by the devious Mahito and the corrupted sorcerer Suguru Geto, a former partner of Satoru Gojo, are plotting an elaborate attack on the realm of Jujutsu sorcery.

Also, I was looking around the internet and I found some really cool Jujutsu Kaisen T-shirts here on Amazon.  Again please click and if any strike your fancy feel free to buy them as we’ll receive a small commission that helps fund future projects.

Review

Jujutsu Kaisen is such a fun show for many reasons.  The animation is beautiful, the characters are fun, and the combat animation is so fluid and kinetic.  It perfectly projects the feeling of power and excitement that you would want to feel with a hero struggling against the darkest forces of our nature.

Kinetic Combat

The fight scenes in Jujutsu Kaisen are intense and captivating. The characters move with lightning-fast agility, showcasing their speed and power as they take down their enemies.

Itodari's swift movements are awe-inspiring, and Saturo Gojo's signature smirk adds to the excitement when he turns the tables on his opponents. Overall, the animation does an excellent job of capturing the kinetic energy of the battles.

Jujutsu Kaisen portrays action in a remarkable way.

Each blow carries weight and power, making the impact feel realistic. Although it may seem like the characters have plot armor, the show emphasizes that failure has severe consequences, even death.

The anime genre's famous mantra of prioritizing feeling over logic is taken to the next level in Jujutsu Kaisen.

Despite the unrealistic camera angles and character feats, the battles feel monumental and intense without losing their sense of grounding.

The flow of combat not surprisingly emulates the combat found in Attack on Titan which makes sense given that MAPPA worked on the final session of Attack on Titan.

Disturbing visual/ horror themes

The series author Gege Akutami seems to have been influenced greatly by the found footage genre of horror as well as urban myth/ modern cryptids.  This is shown in the premise of the series' main antagonists the curses or Cursed Spirits.

The exact origins of curses and jujutsu remain largely unknown, but it is believed that curses have always coexisted with humanity due to their association with negative emotions.

During the Heian Era, the height of jujutsu, Ryomen Sukuna was acknowledged as the unrivaled King of Curses, and his impact continues to be felt in the present day.

Unfortunately, the number of unexplained deaths and disappearances in Japan exceeds ten thousand annually, which is largely attributed to the influence of curses on normal society.

As curses are invisible to non-sorcerers, their existence has been kept hidden, and Jujutsu sorcerers work covertly to protect society from their threat.

The Curses in Jujutsu Kaisen vary in size, shape, and powers from small little fellas to absolutely disturbing monstrosities.

A prime example of this is one of the main antagonists of the series, Mahito. Mahito, a powerful Unregistered Special Grade Spirit, is considered one of the main antagonists in the Jujutsu Kaisen series.

He made his debut in chapter 16 of the manga and is known for his goal to eradicate humanity and revive Sukuna. Despite facing Grade 1 Sorcerers, Mahito showcases immense strength and intelligence, making him a significant threat to the main cast of Jujutsu Kaisen due to his dark and sadistic nature.

His ability is also nothing to sneer at either.

His big move is Idle Transfiguration Mahito's cursed technique grants him the ability to reshape souls. Doing so allows him to disfigure the body of his victims, heal his own wounds, transform his appendages into weapons, and a limitless variety of other possible transformations.

Mahito can even create a clone that may use Idle Transfiguration on himself, but not on others.

This leads to no small amount of body horror moments within the series as Itadori and Nanami work to overcome his power.  Mahito has been well-received by fans despite his creepy power.

Power’s and Cursed Energy

The rules of the universe of Jujutsu Kaisen can be followed even though they are a bit silly at times.

You for sure feel the Shonen influence here a characters take time out of a fight to explain how their power works and how they are going to use their strategy to win the day.

In Jujutsu Kaisen, all living beings emit a type of energy known as Cursed Energy which originates from negative emotions that naturally circulate throughout the body.

However, ordinary individuals lack the ability to regulate this energy flow, causing them to constantly lose Cursed Energy.

This ultimately leads to the creation of Curses, a group of spiritual entities whose main objective is to inflict harm on humans. These Curses are depicted as horrifying monsters, ghosts, and yōkai.

Jujutsu Sorcerers are people who control the flow of Cursed Energy in their bodies, allowing them to use it as they please and also to reduce its release.

High-ranking Sorcerers, like Satoru Gojo, and Curses can refine this energy and use it to perform Cursed Techniques, which tend to be unique to the user or their family. An advanced form of Cursed Technique is Domain Expansion which the users build a pocket dimension of variable size.

Inside the domain, their attacks will always connect and grow in strength.

Satoru Gojo possesses a unique ability known as "infinity", which is often understood as the ability to stop things. It actually allows him to slow things down. When someone tries to hit him, they end up hitting the infinity between Satoru and themselves.

This is based on the convergence of an infinite series, similar to the paradox of Achilles and the tortoise. Satoru can determine what touches him based on mass, speed, and danger ratings.

Verdict

10/10 WOULD WATCH AGAIN!  The show is well worth your time to watch and enjoy.  The best part is that season 2 is now out and streaming on Crunchyroll where you can enjoy other great anime content as well.
